1911 Daimler 38hp TK18 Dual Phaeton
Chassis number 9167
Registration number: TBA
Engine Number 9926
Vintage and Prestige Fine Motor Cars are proud to be offering this 1911 Daimler 38hp TK18 Dual Phaeton for sale. Very rare and in beautiful running condition. Originally this Daimler 38hp TK18 Dual Phaetonwas ordered by a wealthy New Zealand based sheep station owner. It subsequently went to Australia where its current touring body by Dunnet & Hawkes of Brisbane was fitted.
The Daimler 38hp TK18 Dual Phaetonhas a four cylinder sleeve valve engine of some 6.3 liters in capacity. A huge engine rebuild was undertaken a couple of thousand miles ago to the tune of £60,000. This included new custom made cylinder bore liners, cylinder heads, cylinder blocks, Sleeves, junk rings and pistons etc. Consequently, the Daimler engine is in a condition similar to new. It starts readily and settles down to an almost imperceptible idle.
The quietness of this sleeve valve design has to be heard to be believed, or not heard as the case may be! An electric start mechanism has been fitted for ease of starting, obviating the need to swing 6.3 liters from cold on the handle.
On the road the Daimler 38hp TK18 Dual Phaetondrives beautifully. Ample torque is available in all of the three gears and with the car driving along in a very Ghost like manner. Indeed, the Daimler 38hp TK18 Dual Phaetonrepresents a superb alternative to a Rolls Royce Ghost at a fraction of the price for a similarly dated machine.
The Daimler 38hp TK18 Dual Phaetoncomes to us with a veteran car club dating certificate issued in 1956. It also has a FIVA identity card. By way of a ‘running in’ trip for the new engine, the Daimler 38hp TK18 Dual Phaetoncompleted an arduous Alpenfahrt re-enactment covering the course of 1,500 or so steep miles with aplomb, including an ascent of the notorious Katschberg Pass.
The Daimler 38hp TK18 Dual Phaetonis festooned with assorted brass lamps and fittings. A brass pump is used to raise fuel pressure prior to starting. The Daimler has a full length hood and also a complete tonneau cover set. The seats are covered in burgundy buttoned leather in superb condition. Likewise the door cards and pouches are burgundy leather. A period ‘Parp Parp’ horn is fitted along with an eight day clock and eagle mascot. You really have to drive this Daimler 38hp TK18 Dual Phaetonto appreciate just what a wonderful driving machine it is. With the sleeve valve freshly rebuilt it should be good for the next 102 years or so.
