1921 Stutz Model K Roadster
Car no 670
Registration number: BF5721
Mention the word 'Stutz' and the Pavlovian-like response invariably is Bearcat. Seldom has a car become so indelibly etched in memory via a single Model.
Advertised as 'Car that Made Good in a Day' by not only its outstanding performance in the famous Indianapolis 500 where it ran for 24 hours at an average speed of 68.25mph in 1913! It justifiably holds its reputation for reliability and quality build, and was considered at the top end of sporting excellence to drive.
Stutz outsourced engines using the T-head Wisconsin engine which proved reliable, but the motoring public wanted a sports car with comfort and more power. As a result the Bearcat evolved into the Roadster and then by 1921 into a 'sportsman two seater' retaining all of its strengths from the racing circuit.
At the same time in 1921 the T head was considered outdated, to be replaced by a new 4 cylinder design called the KLDH, 5.2 litre, two spark plugs per cylinder, 16 valve; the new engine developed 88 bhp, it propelled the car to over 80mph and provided acceleration 10 to 60mph in under 29 seconds - no mean feat in 1921.
Very original and beautifully restored, this is a classic example of Stutz KLDH engineering at its best. Residing for most of its life in the USA, it has been a regular show car at many USA rallies - a show car and a trailer queen.
Brought into the UK in 2009, the car had never been driven - brake linings and clutch were new and unused. The car has been completely re-commissioned and is now in first rate mechanical running condition and is a delight to drive. It completed a tour of Brittany in France performing with aplomb & has also done an extended drive on Vancouver Island.
The interior is black leather with matching black carpets. The exterior is bright red over black wings in close to perfect condition. Driving the car has a very "Mr Toad" feel to it. "Parp Parp, out of my way" etc. It has recently arrived back in our showrooms as we sold the car previously & can thus vouch for its excellent credentials.
