1939 Derby Bentley Vanden Plas Style MX Overdrive.

Chassis number: B-143-MX

Registration Number: FLK969

An amazingly accurate reconstruction of Vanden Plas design number 1459 of which 4 examples were produced in period.  One of the original cars was used as a reference point with minute millimeter perfect dimensions taken from it to create the car we find today.  Incredible attention to detail has gone into the construction perfectly replicating the myriad details on the original car such as the spring loaded screw fittings securing the side screens.

The donor car for the project was a very late overdrive car, chassis number B-143-MX delivered to its first owner in july of 1939 bearing Park Ward Coachwork.   The car was found barn parked in dilapidated condition but having covered just 69,000 miles from new.  The orginal rubbber pedals had little discernable wear to them, the steering play free & the crank shaft  when stripped & measured had no measurable wear at all.

The above link shows the car as found when the project started in 2013 with the car in its original faded green colours.  The chassis once the body was removed was found to be beautifully prserved with no serious corrosion & just light surface rust prior to being prepped & painted.

The car was completely disassembled down to its component parts prior to a painstaking 4000 hour restoration being done.  A beautifully fabricated ash frame was constructed, again with reference to an original car taking some 700 hours itself to make.  In total for parts & labor some £240k was spent on the project.  The body was hand formed of Aluminium on an English Wheel by a master of the art.

The current owner is selling the car due to approacing 80 years of age & is in the process of disposing of his assorted Derby & other Bentelys that have formed part of a small collection with this car taking pride of place.

This desirable Overdrive Derby is replendant in Maroon over black paint paintwork.  To the interior is stone coloured leather & matching carpets.  A full set of tools is found under the two front seats & also in a fold out panel in the passenger footwell.  The boot has a storage area for the side screens when not in use.  It also has a cunning fold out panel as per the original cars allowing for additional luggage to be carried with the boot open.

The car comes with a full set of side screens, a two part tonneau cover with a dividing zip for the front & a hood bag.  Extraordinary care has been taken to get all the details as per the original making this like a new Vanden Plas car being delivered 80 years late.

The car drives simply beautifully personifying the moniker "The Silent sports car."  The engine is utterly silent & powerful.  The marles steering box is a revelation being a quantum leap over the non overrive cars, light & direct in operation.  This is a car that wants for nothing & has covered just a few hundered shake down miles since completion.  The car runs effortlessly in modern traffic really is one of the pinnacles of Pre War motoring.
