Vintage and Prestige Fine Motor Cars are proud to be offering this 1933 Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sedanca for sale. 2PY was, for a time in America as part of a collection in San Francisco. It eventually returned to England where the last owner before its restoration was Edward Evans, a writer living in Haworth and the home of the Bronte’s. Since then over the last two years a huge restoration has been undertaken.
The body of this Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sedanca has been completely disassembled and repaired where necessary although very little work was required to the frame as the condition was good, as was underneath the skin. A new wooden Sedanca box and rear window frame were made and returned to the colours and condition they were in when exhibited at the 1933 Paris Salon Rolls-Royce Stand.
Pale blue leather was used for the rear compartment in place of the original pale blue cloth. The whole Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sedanca has just emerged from being re-trimmed and the Sedanca roof has been covered in black japanned leather. The Art Deco inside the Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sedanca has been preserved rather successfully and all the woodwork has been professionally re-veneered. The instruments read in Imperial (in white) and metric (in pale blue). Lambs’ wool over-rugs are fitted front and rear. The interior of the luggage box on the rear is trimmed. Big tools are in a leather bag.
Note the Barker Body number plate on the driver’s A-Post and the Barker plaque on the driver’s Sedanca arm. There are two silver plaques on the inside of the glove box lid on the front passenger’s side. One gives the Countess of Granard’s name and addresses whilst the other, because of its residence in France, gives the relevant serial numbers of the Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sedanca.
There is an electric master switch on the right hand side in the rear, under the passenger’s knees on the floor.
There is a working blind on the rear window.
The Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sedanca is magnificent and runs very well. The tracking is properly set up making for easy light steering. Tyre pressures are 45psi front and rear.
The Rolls Royce engine was extensively rebuilt by Marque experts Ristes Motor Co less than 1,000 miles ago. The compressions have been recorded and were all 90, + or – a few. It starts readily off the switch and pulls extremely well and when combined with the modern overdrive and long axle ratio, it truly lives up to the Continental Monniker.
The Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sedanca is fitted with an overdrive. The original exhaust cut-out lever is in place on the floor in front but is not connected. On the instrument panel on the left is a modern contact point for a Sat-Nav or for recharging a telephone.
The current owner has researched the Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sedanca’s history in detail and tells us the following:
The first registered owner was Mrs. Dorothy Hearn Stubbs, who lived in the Deepdene Hotel in Dorking, a huge five star country house which had been built by the Hope family of bankers in about 1830 which has now been demolished.
The Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sedanca passed to Beatrice, Countess of Granard, in the late summer of 1934. I suspect that Mrs. Stubbs may have been an employee of Beatrice Granard or maybe a companion, who did the deal on her behalf.
Beatrice was the twin daughter of Ogden Mills, who was himself the son of a very mega-rich American banker. Ogden Mills was secretary of the US Treasury and married several extremely rich wives. The Mills family lived at Livingston Mansion in Staatsberg, a huge house in New York State where they had lived for a number of generations. The whole scene was beyond imagination.
Beatrice married The 8th Earl of Granard who was Master of the King’s Horse to King George V, an Irish peer, who lived at Castle Forbes in Newtown Forbes, County Longford, Ireland.
She threw millions at Castle Forbes and was the most successful owner of race horses in the 1930s in both England and in France. It was here that she had been left a large house in the center of Paris as well as a racing establishment, by her father in 1929.
To sum up this Rolls Royce Phantom II Continental Barker Sedanca, it has been impeccably restored and thus, runs effortlessly in modern traffic and boasts numerous Art Deco touches and can be considered as elegance personified.
