Vintage and Prestige are proud to offer this 1913 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Colonial London Edinburgh Open Tourer in the style of Barker For Sale.
Registration: IG 4366
Chassis no: 2358
Engine no: 26N
This is a Rare London to Edinburgh Model of which just 188 exples were built. Moreover it is a Colonial Model with the 2" taller radiator making it rarer yet.
2358 was supplied new to Marquis de Arquelles of Spain and specified as a Colonial London to Edinburgh with a cabriolet body. Being a Colonial/Continental car this means a greater capacity fuel tank was fitted, the engine and radiator were mounted higher in the frame for better ground clearance and larger wheels. Looking through the chassis records it is clear that Rudge Whitworth detachable wire wheels were specified, all of this along with the London the Edinburgh spec of a higher compression engine and larger carburettor means that this is one of the finest driving examples available.
Only 188 London to Edinburgh were built and like many great cars 2358 was used and then stored away; she was rediscovered in Barcelona prior to restoration, the body had been removed but the Chassis, engine, bulkhead, back axle, etc were still together.
The original steering column was with the car and from new was a combination of a B and C type. The original bulkhead showed no evidence of oil and air pressure gauges, showing that the vehicle was originally fitted with a wooden type dash which is normally associated with a later car.
James Black Restorations were tasked with a complete nut and bolt restoration and 2358 is an accolade to their craftsmanship. We have have handled many of James Blacks’ restorations and every car is completed to the highest of standards and drives excellently.
The current owner specified the touring body she now wears, this was built using an original Barker body as reference, the bodywork, chassis (and fittings) and wire wheels are all finished in a light shade of grey, the paintwork is finished to a concours standard and beautifully compliments the body lines.
When you open the bonnet you are met by an abundance of nickel; when discovered the original engine was found to be finished this way, during the restoration all parts were stripped and sent to Derby Plating to be re-nickled and as you would expect; the finish is to the highest of standards.
Through the testing period several hundreds of miles were covered and it is with these long distance journeys that 2358 really comes to life; the steering and suspension are excellent, and the engine is simply sublime, the power feels endless and pulls you along the road effortlessly. This London to Edinburgh certainly is ready for long distance touring.
2358 was sent to Mr Ashley Harding of Scotland and this is clearly a “no expenses spared” finish. There is black leather throughout, the seat backs are buttoned and there is an RR on each door pocket. The hood , hood bag and tonneau are all of the same high quality. The hood frame was designed and made by Mr Black, the frame fits beautifully to the front windscreen and allows for slightly dryer motoring when caught in the rain.
The current owner requested that a starter motor was fitted, this has been carefully designed so that it can be removed with no signs of it left behind, but for now it provides an easy push button start and trouble free motoring.
