1936 Bentley 4¼-Litre Sports Saloon by Freestone & Webb

Chassis number: B-52-HK

Both UK Registered & Belgian Registered.

Ordered new by Famed Racing Driver Signore Gino Rovere; A noted Maserati & Alfa Romeo wheel man who competed in numberous events in the 1934 through 1938 years.  Mostly he Drove Alf 8c's & Maserati 4CM Monoposto cars.  The car was delivered new Via Folkestone to Turin in italy.

The Freestone & Webb body was originally ordered for a 3 1/2 litre chassis, but with the advent of the forthcoming 4.25 litre engine was instead fitted to chassis B-52-HK.  Coachwork which it wears to this day.  Pictures of the car appear in the noted tome "Coachwork on Derby Bentleys" by James Taylor.

The coachwork is unusual in that it was a design originally produced for Woolfe Barnato for an 8 litre Bentley chassis.  The design was then scaled down to fit this Derby Bentley.  We have also in our time handled a Freestone & Webb Rolls Royce Phantom 2 with identical rear features.  A beautiful chrome trim located along the door line accentuates the volumptuous shape of the car.

This car has had extensive money spent upon it to put it into very fine mechanical condition.  A full set of bills mostl from Fiennes engineering comes with the car attesting to a full reent engine rebuild completed by the last Belgian owner to whom we sold the car previously.  Thus it starts readily & embodies the Monniker "The Silent Sports Car."

The engine works are extensive & include:  re-coring the radiator and a full engine rebuild, the crankshaft being reground, nitrided and re-white metalled. New parts fitted include the pistons and rings; timing gear bearings; crankshaft balancer discs; cam balance springs; cam follower springs and wheel pins; valve guide seals; valve springs; and a full-flow oil filter system.  As a result the car runs superbly effortlessly cruising at 70MPH on motorways.

In addition, the carburettor jets and needles have been replaced; the flywheel skimmed and an exchange clutch plate fitted; the exhaust system replaced in its entirety; new brake servo discs installed; the rear brakes relined; front/rear wheel bearings replaced; and the rear axle rebuilt with a new high-ratio crown wheel/pinion and new pinion bearings.

Turning to the suspension: the pins and bushes (two excepted) have been replaced and new shackle spacer washers fitted. Other works include rewiring the electrics, fitting flashing indicators and extensive re-chroming by Derby Plating.

Recent works include spectacular re-veneering of the interior woodwork by noted specialists Silvercrest of Iver.  One might easily be forgiven for mistaking as work having been performed by Purdeys.  The wood is spectacular root stock burr walnut with a gorgeous semi matt satin finish.  Likewise the interior lether is brand new chockolate coloured hide in perfect order throughout.
